What an index CFD is

A stock index measures the combined price of a group of shares, such as the largest companies listed in one country. An index CFD (contract for difference) follows that price. You do not own any shares; you take a position on whether the index will rise or fall, and your result is the difference between the price at which you open and the price at which you close, multiplied by the size of your position.

Because a CFD is a contract and not a purchase, you can open it in either direction:

  • Buy if you expect the index to rise. You gain if it rises and lose if it falls.
  • Sell if you expect the index to fall. You gain if it falls and lose if it rises.

Each index is priced in its own currency, for example the Germany 40 in euros or the Japan 225 in yen. Your account is held in US dollars, so profit, loss and margin are converted into dollars.

Trading indices at OGOFX

  • Rising or falling markets

Buy or sell any index with one click in the order ticket. Selling first needs no borrowing of shares.

  • Costs listed in the tables

The current spread, the commission and the swap of every index are listed in the tables below. Spreads move with the market, and swap is charged later, for each night a position stays open.

  • Leverage you choose

Pick your leverage when you open the account, from 1:1 up to 1:500 on Standard, 1:500 on Raw or 1:200 on Pro.

  • Charts with studies

Candles, bars, Heikin Ashi, line and area charts from 1 minute to 1 week, with moving averages, VWAP, RSI, MACD and more.

  • Balance stops at zero

A loss deeper than the balance is written off; the balance stops at zero.

  • One account, every market

The same account trades indices, forex, metals and energy: 51 instruments in all.

How each account prices an index

The three accounts differ in how you pay for a trade, not in what you can trade.

  • Standard has no commission; its markup is in the spread: 50% of the spread is added on indices, so index spreads on Standard are wider than on Raw and Pro.
  • Raw trades the liquidity provider's raw spread plus $7 commission per lot, charged once when the position opens.
  • Pro trades the liquidity provider's raw spread plus $5 commission per lot, charged once when the position opens.

Overnight swap is a separate charge, made for each night a position stays open. The rates are the same on all three accounts: the liquidity provider's rate with a 50% markup.

Spreads live from the platform: currency pairs in pips, other markets as the difference in price as quoted. Raw and Pro trade the liquidity provider's spread. Standard's spread includes its markup: $1 a lot on currency pairs and 50% of the spread on metals, indices and energy. Commission is charged once per lot when a position opens. Swap in US dollars for one lot for one night, at today's rates from the platform (23 October 2026); minus means you pay, plus means you are paid.

Working out an index trade

Three numbers from the specifications table decide what a trade is worth: the contract size, the price and your volume in lots.

  • Position value = lots × contract size × price, in the index's currency.
  • Profit or loss = lots × contract size × the change in price, in the index's currency, then converted into US dollars.
  • Margin = position value ÷ leverage, converted into US dollars. The leverage used is the lowest of the leverage on your account and any limit set for that index.
  • Swap is charged or paid at the broker's daily rollover for each night a position stays open, at the rate in the table, shown in US dollars per lot per night. Wednesday counts three nights on every index today.

Index minimum lots and lot steps are not the same as for currency pairs, and not every index uses the same ones, so check the table before you size a trade. An account can hold up to 2 lots open in one instrument, so the largest order is 2 lots. The leverage and margin page has a calculator that uses live prices.
